Executive Summary

This is paper attempts to resolve the question " Is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs a Valid model of Motivation? ”. We all begin by reviewing Maslow's existence and the simple structure of his Hierarchy of Needs Theory. After that continue by simply explaining what inspired his theory. The use of this theory is evaluated as used in business, Psychotherapy, the healthcare industry, and social scientific research. Similar theories are reviewed including Frederick Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory and Ken Wilbur's theory because interpreted by Rowan. After that we take a review of Empirical tests of Maslow's work to try to determine if his model can be valid. A report by Lounge and Nougian did not support Maslow's theory. However , there are a few studies that show support or part support. A literature review includes evaluations of research done by Tenir, Alderfer, Reiss and Havercamp, and Ghiselli and Manley as well as the Guttman scale test. Although some argue that Maslow's pecking order of needs theory is restricted by nationwide and social boundaries, we look at its work with across cultures. Finally we reach the conclusion that Maslow's hierarchy is a valid model of inspiration, though a few modification may be warranted. It is just a simple nevertheless powerful principle that can help all of us understand, develop and make use of human potential. Introduction

Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory is more than half a century old as its first publication of Character and Determination in 1954. Many theoretical and useful applications were developed on the basis of Maslow's theory (Brenner, Carmack, & Weinstein, 1971. Rowan, 1999. Sirgy, 1986. Shermer, 2004. Seeley, 1992). The scope and scale of the use of Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory transcends a wide range of areas. However , despite of their popularity, the validity and utility with this theory include raised a large number of controversies over time. On one hand, Maslow's theory is incredibly intuitive (Heylighen, 1992), straightforward and apply. Being one of the many enduring hypotheses of behavioral science, Maslow's " Pecking order of Needs” holds high face validity. On the other hand, various questioned the validity and applicability from the theory (Wahba & Bridwell, 1976. McCarth & Perreault, 1984). A few claimed that Maslow's theory has been applied without sufficient scientific data (Soper, Milford & Rosenthal, 1995). You will discover studies that show support or partially support of the theory (Lawler & Tenir, 1967. Ghiselli & Johnson, 1970. Manning & Curtis, 1988. Benson & Dundis, 2003. Barling 1976. Lounge & Nougaim, 1968. Porat, 1977. Reiss & Havercamp 2005), even though some found not any evidence to back up the theory (Hall & Nougaim, 1968. Lawler & Suttle, 1972).
