Salinger's The Heurter in the Rye and David Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath reveal a social commentary about how precisely corruption pervades every aspect of contemporary society and due to society's file corruption error, people either experience remoteness by choice or through condemnation.

Alienation and isolation due to society's corruption is relevant in both works of fiction through the portrayal of the protagonists. For example , Salinger develops Holden Caulfield, a socially limited teenager whom distances him self from other folks due to their phoniness.
