In Watts. E. W. Du Bois' " The Souls of Black Folks” 1903 and Ralph Ellison's " Undetectable Man” 1952 both creators convey which the " dual consciousness” of the African American is slowing down all their race's improvement towards the case freedom in American society. In I Bois' " The Souls of Dark Folks” this individual describes how a double consciousness weakens the African American's spirit. Du Bois clarifies that the Dark-colored wishes to get a true self conscious, one that can be not clouded by ethnic stigma and doubt. The typical black just wishes to be, " the two a Negro and an American without being cursed and spit upon by fellows” (Du Bois 9). But this simple independence cannot be achieved until the Dark-colored is able to " merge his double self into a better and more true self” (Du Bois 9). The dual consciousness triggers one to think constantly split and eroded and therefore less powerful. Ni Bois identified that this lack of pride and power is actually was keeping freedom a great unreachable fact for blacks.
